About the department

The Department of Biochemistry at Coimbatore Medical College, established in 1966, has grown over its more than 50-year history into a cornerstone of medical education and research. Dedicated to advancing the understanding of chemical structures and processes underlying health and disease, the department excels in medical biochemistry, clinical chemistry, and molecular biology, with a focus on precision medicine. It has been offering the MD Biochemistry postgraduate course since 2017 with three seats annually and caters to undergraduate MBBS (200 seats/year) and various allied health science and paramedical programs. Operating a 24-hour biochemistry laboratory with rigorous quality control, the department ensures high standards in clinical diagnostics while fostering innovative research and community health services, solidifying its legacy as a vital academic and healthcare hub.

Head of the Deparment and Professor

Dr. N. Dheeba Lakshmi, MBBS, MD (Biochemistry), serves as the Head of the Department of Biochemistry at Coimbatore Medical College. With a robust academic and professional background, she leads the department in advancing medical education, research, and clinical services. As a member of the Association of Medical Biochemists of India (AMBI), she actively contributes to the field. Her administrative roles include serving as the NMC Nodal Officer and a member of the Anti-Ragging Committee, ensuring academic integrity and student welfare. Dr. Dheeba Lakshmi’s leadership drives the department’s commitment to quality education, innovative research, and community healthcare through a 24-hour biochemistry laboratory.

Additionally, the role of Department NMC Nodal Officer is held, facilitating compliance with regulatory guidelines and academic standards set by the National Medical Commission.
