About the department
The Department of Neurology at Coimbatore Medical College Hospital was established in the year 1985 and has grown into a premier center for neurological care and education. Since 2016, the department has been functioning in the Centenary Super Speciality Block with state-of-the-art infrastructure and facilities. With a 30-bedded Stroke Ward, 30-bedded General Neurology Ward, and dedicated Stroke/Neuro ICU, the department is equipped with advanced diagnostic and rehabilitation units including Electrophysiology and Transcranial Doppler (TCD). Over the years, many eminent neurologists including Dr. M.B. Pranesh, Dr. Christopher Mariodass, Dr. Kandappan, Dr. K.G. Govindarajan, Dr. Kanakaraj, and Dr. Thiruvarutselvam have contributed immensely to the department’s progress. OP services are provided thrice a week, along with specialized clinics for Headache, Epilepsy, and Movement Disorders.

Dr. N. Shobana, M.D., D.M.
Dr. N. Shobana, M.D., D.M. (Neurology), currently serves as the Professor and Head of the Department of Neurology at CMCH. She began her career as a Senior Resident at Madras Medical College and has held various academic and clinical positions, rising through the ranks to become Professor in 2018. She has over 15 years of rich experience in neurology and is a dedicated clinician, educator, and researcher. Dr. Shobana is an active member of professional bodies such as the Indian Academy of Neurology (IAN) and the Tamil Nadu Association of Neurologists (TAN). Under her leadership, the department has achieved significant academic and clinical milestones.
